shawn farner: If you can’t tip, don’t go out

You know, I'm a little conflicted here. I'm not sure that I agree with the decision to fire the employees. At the same time, if it was my restaurant, I wouldn't be happy with what those two said, not at all. Part of working in the service industry is the 'customer first' mantra, which would seem to dictate that you do a good job no matter what.

However, I have never worked as a server, and the fierce defense of them I saw on Twitter today was pretty impressive. I tweeted this, but how I saw it was that those sentiments are probably shared between servers, but it wasn't such a good idea to a) tell a member of the media and b) give them your full name and permission to use it.

Dan Victor did a great job on his story for us to be talking about it like this!

I've found that when we go out and eat as a family (with boys aged 1 and 8 years) that we seem to get less-than-stellar service from some restaurants' wait staff. I call it a self-fulfilling prophesy: the wait staff perceives you're cheap because you have kids and doesn't think they'll get a great tip, so they don't spend as much time or effort on you. Then you leave a less generous tip.

My personal tip meter is 15% of the pre-sales-tax total. You'll get a few points more if you're great, a few points less if you suck.

A PA note here: we just spent a week in Erie and made it a point to try to eat lunches and dinners in local, non-chain restaurants. We received great service everywhere we went. Is staff in Harrisburg restaurants as friendly? I'm not so sure.

I don't think they should have been fired but I disagree with tipping. While tipping is expected in North America, it isn't practiced much in the rest of the world and a common defense of tipping is that it is convention to do so. Well, pretty much only in America it is. I think a server either does their job, or doesn't and I shouldn't have to pay extra for good service. The service should just be good, period. The reward for giving good service should be keeping your job, not getting bonus cash.

hey dumb ass, servers get 2.83 an hour and your tip is there way of living. So dont tell anyone in here its bonus cash. This isnt Europe so lets get that strait. If you want to not tip then maybe you should move there. If you have money to order food, you have money to tip good. If not, stay home, or go to McDonalds. Its people like you that are cheap and ignorant and its people like you that should stay home with there tv dinner. I would LOVe to see you serve a three table section with rude ass's like yourself sitting in the seats who think your tip is keeping your job and getting paid 2.83 an hour, fucker.

This is the type of attitude that makes me NOT want to tip, and disagree with the whole practice of tipping in the first place. Good customer service should be given not because how much money you expect as a tip, but because IT'S YOUR JOB!

And if you don't like the wages, then find employment elsewhere. The agument that resturants are allowed to pay below minimum wage and you live off tips is stupid. Go work at Jack In The Box, or Wal-Mart that does pay minimum wage.

Stop making me feel guilty for your work situation.
