shawn farner: Whoa, a non-tech company that gets tech

Hmm. Where else have I seen someone promote the 20 percent time rule? oh yeah, here!

But really, I completely agree more companies need to do it. I'm jealous to hear you're working in a place that seems to "get it."

I'll be interested to learn whether you feel more productive running an IM client on your workstation. In my (admittedly undisciplined) experience, even work-related IM is an invitiation to constant interruption.

I actually find the IM client interrupts me the least out of all interactions. If someone sends a message, I can quickly minimize and not lose my train of thought. If someone comes to my desk, I can be more easily sidetracked. Of course, such a system is open to abuse, but since users can't IM anyone outside the company, I haven't really seen any of it.

Excellent points and it is so refreshing to see a company that as you stated "gets tech". I'm a big believer in IM's ability to increase productivity. (http://tinyurl.com/5kn936) I'm trying to get colleagues to use GTalk in place of a corporate solution. I completely agree with Reaching out and the 20% rule but I'm afraid adoption will be slim to none.

I'm a big fan of Exchange and it has its place but many small business could save time and money looking at other messaging solutions.

PS: This post was the one that caused me to click the subscribe link. Good stuff.
